Rotorua/ Te Puia (Geysers/Boiling Mud/Lake) – Monday, December 13th

At Te Puia there were also natural geysers and boiling mud. The sulfur smell here was horrible, but it became oddly neutral after about an hour.

All over Rotorua were little fenced off areas that had boiling mud; in people’s yards, in the parks, by the side of the roads. These would just appear randomly and you’d know what they were because there would be a fence around them. We saw one in someone’s back yard that was so hot they had built a cooking grill over it! Sulfur burgers, anyone?
We had lunch on Rotorua lake at a ridiculously slow café. Gorgeous views with black swans, sea planes and ferries.
