Christchurch Crater Rim Hike - Thursday, December 16th

Lyttleton Port area (and a few other areas like Port Chalmers/Dunedin by the way) was formed when a volcano erupted then broke through its side walls whereupon the ocean flooded in and drowned the fires. The crater rim remains, and is a marked walking track, so we went on a 3 hour hike. We had no idea how many types of terrain and how difficult this hike was going to be when we decided to walk it. Los of stones and upping and downing. It was beautiful though and we felt it in every muscle for the next 2 days.

This hike turned out to be one of our favorite things we did on this whole trip! There were really neat styles built to cross over the fence lines. We eventually ended up in a little town called Sumner and a well deserved pint. Our ticket was for the gondola ride, a self guided hike and a pin-t at a Sumner pub. Our visitor center person mis-pronounced pie-nt as pin-t. We really needed a pin-t and a pyss by the time we arrived!!
