Lanarch Castle – Dunedin, Friday, December 17th

A great castle that was built in 1871, and the only castle in the southern hemisphere, as it happens. It fell into disrepair and was bought in the early 1970’s by a regular family that has worked hard to restore it to its original condition. They have been given and have purchased original items (like chandeliers and furniture and cutlery) that had been sold off at auction when the family fortunes fell into decline in the late 1800’s. There are amazing views from this spot, but we just could not see through the heavy fog and rain. (again!)

Everything about this place was beautiful! We were not allowed to take pictures inside the castle, which was a bummer as the wood and tile work was amazing, as was the stained glass work. Check it out online; google Lanarch Castle, Dunedin, New Zealand
